Betty Anne Nixon, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and Certified EMDR Clinician

About

Hello and welcome! I am Betty Anne Nixon. I am a psychiatric mental health Nurse Practitioner and EMDR certified clinician. I am a little bit conservative in some ways, and a little bit crunchy in other ways. Above all, I am inspired to work with you to expand the positive aspects of your life.

Do you have chronic pain, migraines, IBS, panic or anxiety, or depression? Did you know that Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) can write on the slate of your life and could still be having an adverse impact in your adult life? Can you picture what life looks like for you in 6 months? A year? Ten years?

Is there an inner dialogue that tells you that you are shameful, powerless, unsafe, powerless, or a failure? What if we could work together to change this self talk through brain based therapy?

This is a collaboration. I do this with you, not to you. This means we both work hard inside and outside of session to facilitate improvement of your symptoms and lead you to your best life. Please know that transformational therapy does not set out to re-traumatize. In fact, the client is in the driver’s seat and has power, control, and agency in the therapy session. Decisions about every aspect of the session, including disclosure (or not) and tolerance of emotional distress are in the hands of the client.

You will find the therapy session to be warm, relational, validating, and sometimes direct. We can’t treat what we don’t acknowledge. This does not mean it is necessary to review the whole distressing story or the details of every trauma. While the process call for accessing some (parts of) distressing memories, the intended outcome is to facilitate metabolism of those body feelings. In other words, the distant memory remains, but the emotional charge is lessened, or gone. There are no promises or guarantees, but it does offer an opportunity to learn and be understood in a calmer body.

EMDR CERTIFICATION indicates a clinician who has completed an EMDR training program, has had additional hours of consultation, and has completed a certain number EMDR sessions with patients. It is a designation that indicates the clinician has experience, skills, and expertise.

FAQs

  • A: I am a state licensed and Board certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. As such, I am credentialed to provide Evaluation and Management services and therapy. This means that I will perform an Initial Psychiatric Evaluation, consider medication recommendations when appropriate, and offer counseling psychotherapy as part of your treatment plan.

  • A: I have a passion for utilizing the powerful benefits of psychodynamic therapy, including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). There can be integration of modalities such Developmental Needs Meeting Strategies (DNMS), Somatic Experiencing, and Ego States work. These strategies are designed to assist clients who are seeking relief from anxiety, depression, dissociation, and post-traumatic stress. It is a psychodynamic processing that works at a brain level.

  • EMDR is a form of adaptive information processing which helps the brain evolve from limiting beliefs.

Research in neuro-plasticity shows that our brain has the ability to change and create new pathways.

These new pathways can help change our way of thinking and improve mood and are strengthened with repetition. A way to describe this is “neurons that fire together, wire together.” EMDR uses our brains’ flexibility to reorganize itself by forming new connections. This allows the brain to recover from psychic wounding and adjust to new situations.

  • ACEs are potentially traumatic events that happen in childhood such as physical abuse, emotional abuse, verbal abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, substance and alcohol use. It can also include parent chronic illness, death of a loved one, or mental illness. This can lead to behavioral issues, social withdrawal, emotional dysregulation, hypervigilance, aggression, inattention, impaired focus, distractibility, excessive worry/anxiety, depression, mood swings, guilt and self blame, and shame. It can lead to feeling not good enough, not safe, and powerless in your adult life.

  • A: Individualized Treatment Plans are composed in collaboration with the client. A client may be seen one time per week, once every two weeks, or for EMDRX (private pay intensive 90 minute x 3) sessions. Generally, I offer EMDR therapy for a discrete period of time - until the client and I agree they no longer need support.

  • A: I support EMDR clients who are physically in New Jersey for their sessions via tele-health only. There are  currently 2 ways to format this:

    • Adjunct intensive therapy (6-8 intensive sessions) in collaboration with your primary talk therapist.

    • Personalized treatment programs for individuals (EMDRX Intensives)

  • A:  It is paramount that you feel safe with your clinician. This is your space to do your work. Many clients in my practice have this experience with me. True, genuine, therapeutic work can feel rigorous or even, exhaustive. It is important to have time to rest and process between sessions. Therapy is also a fluid process. If at any point in the therapeutic relationship, the client and/or the clinician believe it is not (or is no longer) a good fit, it is can be appropriate to pause or discontinue therapy.

EMDR

EYE MOVEMENT DESENSITIZATION & REPROCESSING

Our brain has a natural integrating process for memories. When there is a traumatic event, it may not be processed naturally and become “stuck”. This can lead to symptoms of reactivity, feeling “triggered”, and having dramatic body symptoms of distress. EMDR can be part of a therapeutic plan to target specific distress, symptoms or blocks that are impeding the therapeutic work.

Resourcing: We will work together to strengthen internal resources while soothing parts of you that feel limited. EMDR uses fantasy, imagination, imagery, emotions, body sensations, and positive cognitions to increase feelings of calm, safety, and confidence.

Resolving relationship difficulties: Attachment-focused EMDR works to repair unmet development needs (often called attachment wounding) when we have experienced an absence of care/neglect or abuse.

Trauma recovery: While EMDR is often used for big “T” trauma (e.g. a major car accident, assault), it may also be helpful for small “t” traumas (interpersonal conflict, stress, anxiety, depression, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE)). One of the most overlooked aspects of small ‘t’ traumas is the cumulative effect. Multiple small ‘t’ traumas may lead to distress in the nervous system and emotional distress.
